Total Rail Solutions (TRS) the complete rail service provider, is pleased to announce a strengthening of its senior team.
In addition to adding expertise and experience, the business has simplified its working processes to ensure its customers are best placed to meet and address the challenges and opportunities of an evolving rail network.
TRS CEO Paul Bateman said, “I am delighted to welcome the new members of our leadership team. We have worked diligently to ensure the recruitment strategy matched that of the business and the needs of our customers, employees and stakeholders. The new team will work alongside Head of Assurance, Steve Wadham and Head of Operations, Steve Bodman, both of whom bring a depth of knowledge and expertise of the market and industry, in addition to a proven track record of delivering results”.

Head of Engineering: Gareth Phillips.
After serving in the armed forces for 17 years, Gareth left the military in 2001 and became the fourth generation of his family to work in the rail industry.
The experience of converting and manufacturing rail machines and working on a busy hire desk stood Gareth in good stead, as his career progressed through management and directorships within the rail plant sector.
Gareth, who joined TRS in March 2021 said, “When I met Paul, I was excited by the vision he has for the business and the direction he wants to take the team. I was hooked and absolutely delighted to come on board. I have a clear goal of making the engineering function more efficient and effective. I am already hard at work planning, recruiting and executing, so that TRS customers consistently receive the safest, compliant, reliable equipment and staff on every project”.
Head of Business Development: Alex Gadd.
Alex brings a wealth of both product and sales experience, having worked for over 15 years in both the plant hire sector with Hewden and machine manufacturing sector with JCB.
Moving to a customer centric role was key to Alex leaving the OEM sector, with the knowledge and experience gained from two separate, successful periods of personal achievement and company performance, the time was right for that next move.
Alex who joined TRS in November 2020 said, “The opportunity to move and develop within a core industry, in the more specialised rail market was hugely appealing. Moving closer to the customer and being able to build a structured business development team, that creates meaningful relationships and on plan revenue stream, is something that both motivates and excites me”.
Chief Finance Officer (CFO): Andrew Hetzel.
A finance professional of some 25 years, Andrew brings a wealth of experience gained from the manufacturing, automotive, logistics and construction sectors.
With the business keen to improve its process and procedures, invest and innovative in new ways of delivering customer solutions, the need for an embedded, collaborative, finance support function is vital to ensure the business operates in the most effective and efficient manner.
Andrew who joined TRS in April 2021 said, “I recognised when discussing this career opportunity, that TRS had a core philosophy that placed customers at heart of everything it does. Our customers journey and experience defines who we are as a business. I look forward to building on the platform my predecessor developed. Ensuring the finance function is visible and accessible to the teams in the business is a critical and early strategic move. I believe this will become a key contributor to advancing the ambition of the business and executing the strategy that delivers value to customers, the business and our stakeholders”.
HR Manager: Mel Budworth.
With 15 years’ experience of working with companies in both corporate organisations and SME businesses, Mel is a seasoned HR professional and practitioner.
With a restructured private equity owned model, TRS is well placed for the next period of its strategic development. With people as the key success factor, the culture and values of the business must be integrated with the experience TRS customers receive, in addition to the everyday touchpoints of every stakeholder.
Mel, who joined TRS in April 2021 said, “I seem to have a developed a relationship and preference for companies operating in ‘gritty’ environments. The experience I have gained in the manufacturing and retail sectors, will, I am sure, be beneficial as we look at ways of improving processes and procedures. I am particularly keen to get to know the TRS team, I am here for everyone and very much look forward to supporting & developing the team so that they can be the best they can”.
