The site at Walk Mill comprised of a 10m high steep embankment that had a high ballast shoulder over a length of approximately 300m. This section of line was classed as “at risk” of having continual ESR/TSR due to potential alignment issues caused by the lack of a compliant cess and ballast retainment issues on the shoulder.
Amco approached TRS to design and construct a cess retention system and a safe cess walkway.
To hold back the cess and ballast we installed 7m long H-Piles at 1m centres along the crest of the Down Cess. Between the H-Piles we used hardwood timber to retain the ballast. We then introduced a safer cess walkway and also a new handrail and cable route to improve worker safety.
As the four week project was carried out at the same time as the Holme Tunnel Blockade, this restricted access to the Walk Mill site. We therefore worked closely with the maintainer and shared a small access point five miles away. This meant we had to transport all our materials during Saturday night possessions, and in sufficient quantities to keep our gangs busy during the week.
The contract started and finished on time and we delivered it on budget and with zero accidents.
