The Crossrail West Outer project will provide new trains, better stations and easier, more reliable journeys for passengers. The western section of the Elizabeth line route will run on the existing rail network from Paddington to Heathrow and Reading.
As part of the Crossrail West Outer Project major upgrades to the existing rail network are required between Heathrow and Taplow, east of Reading.
TRS were contracted by Balfour Beatty to provide RRV and POS services to support with the electrification works.
In preparation for line electrification, Balfour Beatty carried out permanent way works to re-align the track and update the points for high-speed trains. TRS supplied the road-rail excavators for digging and ballasting the track.
As the project progressed we were then contracted to provide full POS services for the electrification work. We employed our Doosan 270 Long Reach machines to lift the electrification infrastructure into place. Realising the need to increase lift capacity, we worked with our equipment manufacturer, GOS Engineering Services, to adapt the Long Reach by adding stabilisers to improve stability and increase hydraulic capacity, resulting in a 25% increase in lift capacity.
As the project continued to grow and new lifting challenges arose, our team continued to evolve our machines, developing heavier portal booms and anchors until the evolution of the Ultimate 270 Teleboom Crane.
With the bridge between RRV excavator cranes and Kiroff cranes being such a leap, the Ultimate 270 Teleboom Crane met the need for a smaller, faster, cheaper and more efficient model, ideal for electrification projects.
At the peak of the project TRS supplied and operated up to 12 Doosan Long Reachs, with 25 MEWPS present on site. We had a team of approx. 90 staff working seven nights a week, including crane drivers to operate the plant, and POS supervisors.
