New Trains Call For Platform Upgrades

BACKGROUND

As electrification projects allow new electric trains to replace diesel multiple unit (DMU) models, the latter are being moved onto local and rural routes. However, DMUs are often formed of many carriages, making them too long for platforms at smaller train stations. Civils work is therefore needed to upgrade the stations ready for DMU introduction.

Duration:
9-12 months

Client:
Amco

SCOPE

Amco has been awarded the contract to upgrade the tracks and platforms at 10 stations throughout Wiltshire and Gloucestershire. This project involves moving rail track positions and adjusting platform copers, to make it possible for the stations to receive DMU trains.

TRS has been sub-contracted to provide the civils work.

PROJECT

As part of the project our multi-disciplined civils teams are installing new platform coping slabs, tactile paving, and drainage. On some stations we are also relaying tarmac surfacing and installed lighting duct work. Working to Amco’s design and project deadlines, we are project-managing our own teams and working as flexibly as possible to meet our client’s needs.

With all stations remaining operational for most of the project’s duration, we are carrying out the majority of the work during a 4.5-hour window, between midnight and 4.30am on week nights and during 8hr possessions at weekends. This means time-management is key, due to the short time periods when work can be done, and the need to make the work areas safe ready to open to the public each morning.

With bad weather conditions threatening to delay the project, we have increased the size of our workforce to be able to work on sites concurrently, in order to help keep the project on track.
